Worship Services are highlights of the Conference
Bishop Stanovsky’s Installation Service
Wednesday, June 14, 7 p.m.
The members and guests of annual conference are encouraged to attend this service to celebrate Bishop Elaine JW Stanovsky being installed officially as the episcopal leader of the Greater Northwest Area. She will deliver the message. It is also open to the public and members of congregations nearby are encouraged to attend.
Offering – Project Rebuild: Up From the Ashes is a laity-driven fundraising and volunteer team recruitment effort to rebuild homes lost in the North Central Washington due to devastating wildfires in 2014 and 2015. Our goal in the Pacific Northwest Conference is to raise enough money to rebuild six homes, one for each district in the conference, at a cost of about $92,000 each. UMCOR has provided $90,000 as seed money and so far we have raised about $150,000. With your help and the help of churches all across the conferences we can meet our goal. Thank you for your generous contribution.
Memorial Worship Service
Thursday, June 15 7:30 p.m.
During a shared Memorial Service on Thursday night, we will remember clergy members and spouses who have passed away over the last year along with laity in the life of the conference. We’ll also remember the passing of Bishops, spouses, and surviving spouses of bishops from across the global United Methodist connection. Finally, we’ll take a moment to mark the closures of nine United Methodist faith communities from the Oregon-Idaho and Pacific Northwest Conferences. The Rev. Shalom Agtarap will be the preacher, delivering a message entitled “Rivers of Life” based on John 7:37-39.
Offering – Education is Hope! The people of the south Congo are poor, plagued by disease and war. The United Methodist Church is strong and growing, and offers hope of abundant life to children through education. Newly elected Bishop Kasap Owan shared with Bishop Stanovsky an urgent need for desks for 600 students in two schools in Lubumbashi. Each locally manufactured desk seats four students, at a cost of about $40 per student. Give what you can to bring hope to the children of Lubumbashi. Checks may be made payable to: “South Congo Schools.”
Ordination & Commissioning Service
Saturday, June 17, 2 p.m.
A Service of Word and Table for Commissioning and Ordination will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. During this service we’ll celebrate the ordination of two elders and one deacon while also commissioning 11 provisional elders and three provisional deacons. The Rev. Jeremy Smith, Minister of Discipleship at Portland First United Methodist Church, will deliver the sermon, “Can’t Stop the Beat” based on Deuteronomy 6:4-9. The Battleground High School Jazz Band will offer special music at several times throughout the service.
Offering – A New Church in East Anchorage: In June 2016, after 50 years of ministry, the East Anchorage United Methodist Church was discontinued. This left a void in a neighborhood that has two of the most diverse middle schools and one of the most diverse high schools in the entire United States. The Alaska United Methodist Conference is dreaming of the next expression of ministry in East Anchorage. We dream of a faith community that reflects the many cultures that are represented in the community and respond to their needs in authentic, Christ-like ways that respects their different backgrounds. With your gifts today, you can share in that dream and help make it a reality. Thank you!
Be prepared to vote on Constitutional Amendments
All members of our annual conferences will be voting on five proposed amendments to the portion of the Book of Discipline known as the Constitution. These proposals came to General Conference as petitions and passed by a 2/3 majority. Now they must be voted on in all annual conferences and must receive at least 2/3 of the votes of all the conference members.
Some of these amendments may appear obscure, but some would have a direct effect on our lives as the church in the Western Jurisdiction. The General Conference delegation heads have prepared a document to explain the amendments. Please read this below before you come so you can make an informed vote. The vote will take place during the shared plenary session on Friday. Each individual vote becomes part of the global total, so be sure to be there and be counted.
Tips for Breezing Through Check-In
- Enter through the hotel lobby entrance and walk through the lobby to the elevators or stairs and descend to the ground floor. The check-in area will be straight ahead in the Clark and Washington Rooms.
- The check-in time is 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. If that is not convenient, check-in in the lounge near the Grand Ballroom on Thursday morning 7:00-9:30 a.m.
- If you pre-registered and paid for meals you will go straight to your district table to pick up your name tag, meal tickets and special dietary needs cards. Easy-breezy!
- If you did not pre-register, you will go to the help desk to register and pay for meals. If you are a member you will be charged the $75 late fee. There is no late fee for guests but meal tickets will be limited.
- The check-in area will close a few minutes before the Bishop’s Installation service begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be busiest from 6-7 so please plan ahead so you can breeze through earlier in the afternoon if possible. The volunteers and staff will appreciate this!
Clergy Photographer available Wednesday and Thursday
OR-ID and PNW clergy are encouraged to have their photos taken during the check-in times on Wednesday, 3:00-7:00 pm or Thursday, 7:00-9:30 a.m. No need to make an appointment, just drop by the photographers table near the check-in area. Photos will be used by the Conference and shared with the local church for their website or other use.
Pre-Conference Handbooks Ready Now
The pre-conference handbook contains all the written materials you will need in one easy to download package. It has sections for orientation (including what to bring, the schedule, and information for clergy on robing), reports, recommended legislation, and more. If you do not have a laptop or mobile device to download it to, please print all or part of the handbook and put it in a three-ring notebook for use during the conference. There will be limited paper copies available for $10 for those with no computer access.
What to Bring to Annual Conference
- Checkbook or cash for offerings and shopping at the Cokesbury book store. Cash for tipping the hotel staff will be encouraged. Credit cards are accepted for registration and at Cokesbury.
- Payment for meals and late fee if you have not already registered.
- UMCOR kits or items for kits from your church. Health kits are especially needed. There will be a truck in the Red Lion parking lot on Wednesday, June 14.
- Sweater or light coat if desired. Plenary room temperature can be cool.
- Consider bringing small packaged snacks without nuts if you tend to get hungry in the afternoons. Friday’s banquet begins at 7 p.m.
- Pack a raincoat or umbrella for Saturday morning when we will gather outside on the Columbia riverfront, rain or shine. If you pack it, it won’t rain, right?
United Methodist Women invited to meet on Friday
United Methodist Women at Annual Conference are invited to meet to share conversation with sisters from the Greater Northwest Area! We will also get to hear from Stell Wallace, Noriko Lao, and Roz Collins, our representatives on the National Board of Directors and National Program Advisory Board. Meet in the Overton room on the lower level, from 5:45-6:45 pm before the banquet.
