A love of working in a garden and a love for people in their community has grown into a beautiful relationship between Gresham United Methodist Church and Latina doulas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Sandra Hernandes founded Doulas Latinas International in\n2013 because she saw the need for Latina women to have emotional and linguistic\nsupport during pregnancy and childbirth. She based her mission of training\ncommunity members to be doulas (or doulos, if male) for Latinx families on\nhealth equity, so that women who had an advocate to translate and advocate for\nthem would have more options in their medical care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe mother is better educated about this culture, which may\nbe different than where she came from, and she feels more confident.\u201d Hernandes\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stresses that the doulas work with<\/em> the mothers\nand families, always listening to what they want, rather than doing things for<\/em>\nthem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trista Wynne, assistant pastor at Gresham UMC, met Hernandes\nin February 2020 and they bonded over their passion for growing healthy food in\nthe church\u2019s Common Good Garden and building community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Wynne \u2018s love of\ngardening came from her master gardener father and is a central part of her\nfaith<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy passion is working in the earth and connecting people to\nthe creation. There is a lot of teaching in scriptures you can\u2019t understand,\nunless you are connected to the earth,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wynne is a candidate for ordination in the Pacific Northwest\narea. When senior pastor, Dr. Rev. Steve Lewis, asked her what she wanted to\nfocus on this year in her ministry, she told him she wanted to enlarge the\ngarden.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cConnecting with spirit comes naturally to me through\ncreation care,\u201d Wynne said. \u201cThat is an essential part of my being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sandra Hernandes wants to help mothers and families in her\ncare learn more about nutrition so they can improve conditions such as diabetes\nand anemia. She sees the garden as a way to educate and provide fresh produce\nfor her low-income clients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a doula?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hernandes opened her Doulas Latinas International office in\nGresham UMC in 2014 and since then has trained about 55 doulas. Community\ndoulas are often mothers who want to support other mothers and families through\npregnancy, during childbirth and then for about two weeks to a month\npostpartum. They help by translating for the mother and advocating for her if\nshe wants to have a natural birth plan with little to no medications. They are\nnot medical professionals but fill the role of emotional support when working\nwith doctors, nurses, and midwives in healthcare settings. The postpartum check-ins\noffer support for breastfeeding and attachment. The doulas largely volunteer\ntheir time but Hernandes has advocated for funding stipends for them of $350\nper case to cover their expenses. Gresham UMC donated $2,000 this year for\ntraining expenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are currently 15 doulas from this program working in\nLatinx communities in Gresham, Hood River and Woodburn. Lewis, recently\nconnected Hernandes with Hillsboro UMC\u2019s Hispanic farmworkers outreach and they\nnow have doulas working within that community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pregnant women are usually referred to their doula services\nthrough social workers at hospitals or WIC clinics (the USDA supplemental\nnutrition program for women, infants, and children). Sometimes the call comes about\ntwo months before the birth, sometimes as short as a week or two before labor,\nHernandes explained. Whenever the call comes, they try to help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gardening together in the time of Coronavirus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike a community garden where plots are assigned or rented\nto individuals to plant and care for, the Common Good Garden is a garden that\nbelongs to all who work in it.  Nine new\nraised beds have been built this spring with the help of a grant from Columbia\nDistrict Church Extension Society (CDCES) funds. Older beds that were in\ndisrepair have been rebuilt with the help of funds from the church\u2019s memorial\ngarden fund. Wynne asked for help constructing the newly enlarged garden and some\nmen from the church responded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donning gloves and masks and maintaining social distance,\nthey got to work making her vision a reality. They worked a few at a time to\nmaintain safety.  She sees the congregation\nexcited by the progress.  Church member\nRobert told Wynne, \u201cIt\u2019s really heartening to do something constructive during\nthis time.\u201d Wynne said she \u201csees a sparkle in people\u2019s eyes\u201d when talking about\nthe garden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hernandes used her network of contacts to bring resources to\nthe garden. She contacted the Oregon Food Bank through their Seed to Supper\nprogram. They told her they would deliver a truck load of planting soil and\nseeds if she arranged for classes on gardening, cooking and nutrition. Because\nclasses cannot be taught inside the church during COVID-19 restrictions, she\nredesigned the classes to be practical education on planting and caring for a\ngarden. Some of her students had never planted anything before and are learning\nfrom church members.She sees great enthusiasm in their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using raised beds makes the garden work accessible to older church\nmembers and the very young working with their parents. Gresham UMC houses a Head\nStart classroom and last fall the students helped to harvest the pumpkins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wynne and Hernandes look forward to a harvest this fall that\nwill involve different ages and races working together. The Doulas Latinas will\nbe there with their children. Church members will be there harvesting for their\nown household or to donate. When asked how they will divide the harvest, Wynne\nand Hernandes looked at each other with knowing smiles and said that is\nsomething they are talking about now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The garden is visible from the front of the church.\nNeighbors walking by sometimes ask what is going on. Wynne loves telling them\nabout the garden. It\u2019s becoming a connection point for the neighborhood and the\nchurch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More classes on nutrition and cooking are planned at harvest\ntime. Hernandes and Wynne envision classes on cooking things like salsa when\nthe tomatoes, tomatillos and peppers ripen, offering recipes for squash and\nhealthful uses of herbs. Flash freezing corn might be taught alongside canning\ntechniques. Healthy eating will be stressed. The goal is to have the classes be\nbilingual in Spanish and English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
