Paul Graves<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap dropcapp3\">On both the national and local scenes, \u201cretribution\u201d and \u201cretaliation\u201d are threatened by people almost indiscriminately. Anger and fear are alive and unwell in our culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a recent interview on Fox News, Donald Trump was asked what he will do if \u201cAmericans revolt on Election Day\u201d if Trump wins. (How did we get to where this dysfunctional question is even asked?) Mr. Trump reactively responded: \u201cWe\u2019ll put them down very quickly. It\u2019s called \u2018Insurrection.\u2019 We\u2019ll just send (military) in and we do it very easy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was then asked to comment on a tragic shooting in Portland, Oregon, and then the shooter was later killed by police. Mr. Trump commented on the killer being shot: \u201cI will tell you something. That\u2019s the way it has to be. There has to be retribution when you have crime like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a local level, the mask\/no mask controversy brings out some puzzling, fearful reactions. My wife and I were yelled at in a big-box store parking lot by a woman who was offended by our wearing masks: \u201cTake off your masks!\u201d Why is our mask-wearing any of her business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are a majority of people in our country so fearful that they must emotionally spew their feelings out at people who are different \u2013 are \u201cother\u201d \u2013 than they are? In my limited experience, they are a loud minority. And I\u2019m sad for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My sadness pushes me to explore where this spirit of retribution might find its foothold. Are retribution and retaliation Christian values? Absolutely not!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many, I suspect they come from a serious misreading of \u201ceye for an eye, tooth for tooth\u201d, found in Exodus 21: 23-25, Leviticus 24: 19-20 and Deuteronomy 19:20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also suspect those who take these passages literally haven\u2019t spent much time reflecting on Jesus\u2019 interpretation of them. Find his extension of those laws in Matthew 5:38-42. He knew those commands were not lived out literally in ancient times. Monetary compensation was more in vogue for injuries caused. Not retribution, but a form of restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, Jesus urged his listeners (mostly Jews, some Gentiles, no Christians at this point) to go beyond retribution or retaliation to other ways of dealing with being wronged. \u201cTurn the other cheek,\u201d \u201cgo the extra mile,\u201d \u201cgive more than you\u2019re sued for.\u201d His students also knew great fear, great insecurity, great anger. We certainly didn\u2019t invent those feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s like Jesus understood those feelings as emotional bullies living inside of us. They can intimidate us to the point we only see lashing out verbally or physically as our only options. Those options certainly seem to be all some people \u2013 some well-intentioned Christian people even \u2013 seem to choose. But Jesus offers other options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read his words carefully, imaginatively, and you might see some of those options. They all command his followers to not return violence for violence. Stand up to your inner bully. Humble your bully by dismissing violence as an option. Humble your bully by standing up courageously to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHumble\u201d and \u201chumiliate\u201d come from&nbsp;<em>humus<\/em>, or \u201cearth.\u201d Our inner bullies (read \u201cout-of-control egos\u201d) must be brought back to earth. Violence feelings feed them. Healthy humiliation starves them. But that humbling, that humiliation, also feeds the \u201cbetter self\u201d that lives inside, beneath the bully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus\u2019 alternative way deals with lash-out-blindly feelings, deeply negative reactions. Self-control is empowered with the confidence that we are loved in spite of our retributive or retaliatory tendencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, we are safe to change those tendencies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t let your inner bully \u2013 or someone else\u2019s outer bully \u2013 decide who you are. You are God\u2019s child!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The Rev.
