Paul Graves<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap dropcapp3\">With only a few days until Election Day, so much of daily thought and conversation centers on political matters. I still hear persons question whether they\u2019ll vote because they think their votes don\u2019t matter. To that I say:\u00a0Your vote may or may not matter in the final vote tally, but it can always matter to your sense of power, conscience and consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we choose not to vote, we effectively give away a piece of our power as individual persons. Is that not important to you?\u00a0If not, perhaps there are other places in your life where you also feel powerless. If so, I\u2019m very sorry you experience life in such a\u00a0despairing\u00a0way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes power is forcibly taken from us. Often, however, we give our power away\u00a0to\u00a0someone else. For healthy and for unhealthy reasons, we give that power away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you remember the\u00a0overly-publicized incident in New York City where a woman falsely accused a black man of threatening her life? He was found innocent of that charge;\u00a0and then\u00a0he\u00a0refused to file charges against her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His response confounded some.\u00a0He chose to be compassionate toward her and said \u201c\u2026under the circumstances, it\u2019s the only course I can pursue\u00a0<em>in good conscience<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conscience, that sneaky little inner voice in each of us that reminds us about right and wrong, about using power and abusing power, and about considering the consequences of our actions. It is from a Latin word that means \u201cknowing together with\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bSo, conscience is not just within you\u00a0or me.\u00a0It is within us. It is a community gift to be used on behalf of all people. I think it may have a combined origin: a mix of God-designed moral order and socially formed guidelines passed from family to family\u00a0to community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We both observe and, too frequently, experience the abuse, the misuse of power in our communities and nation because people who have some kind of power have\u00a0a mysterious lack of\u00a0conscience.\u00a0I truly don\u2019t understand that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reclaim our portion of power, then, means we need to determine if we\u2019re willing to \u201cpay the consequences\u201d of acting on our personal and\u00a0collective conscience.\u00a0That\u2019s when people write letters to the editor, or march peacefully for human rights, or Black Lives Matter, or women\u2019s health rights, or support \u201cGet Out the Vote\u201d, or\u2026\u00a0(pick your effort).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bWhat\u00a0cause is important enough\u00a0for you\u00a0to mobilize a conscientious effort to re-balance\u00a0your sense of unjust and compassionless treatment of others?\u00a0For many persons, those causes\u00a0fire\u00a0their\u00a0conscience-fueled imaginations\u00a0to take back their inner power so\u00a0much better\u00a0outward consequences can\u00a0happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet many of us stay on the sidelines of these events and causes. We have our own, often valid, reasons. Does that mean we are less committed to reclaiming our power, of exercising our personal and community consciences, of desiring healthier consciences?\u00a0\u00a0I really don\u2019t think so!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it might suggest we\u2019re\u00a0afraid to let\u00a0ourselves be touched deeply enough\u00a0by the pain of others. \u00a0Maybe\u00a0we\u2019ve not yet\u00a0realized\u00a0that\u00a0who we are as God\u2019s children is less powerful when we hunker down and take care only of ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our power comes from a God who entered our lives as a vulnerable baby, and\u00a0who grew up to show his followers,\u00a0and us,how vulnerability has its own incredible power to change us and others. Jesus let his conscience help weigh the consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we find ways to do that, we re-discover our inner power can be\u00a0used in reconciling ways, in nourishing ways. Consequences\u00a0worthy of us all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The Rev.
