{"id":21608,"date":"2020-12-03T20:26:54","date_gmt":"2020-12-04T04:26:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greaternw.org\/news\/?p=21608"},"modified":"2020-12-03T20:27:04","modified_gmt":"2020-12-04T04:27:04","slug":"when-it-matters-doesnt-seem-to-matter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greaternw.org\/news\/when-it-matters-doesnt-seem-to-matter\/","title":{"rendered":"When &#8216;It Matters&#8217; doesn&#8217;t seem to matter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By\u00a0<strong>Rev. Paul Graves<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For 24 2\/3 years, I\u2019ve been privileged to write a \u201cFaith and Values\u201d column for The Spokesman-Review. In that time, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve actually explored some of the meanings of those words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I do so today, primarily because in the American cultural climate we have, \u201cfaith\u201d and \u201cvalues\u201d seem to have been cut loose from their traditional moorings.\u00a0They\u2019re adrift in an angry and fearful rapids-filled river, racing toward an unknown sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On opposite banks of that river are people shouting irrational things at one another, waving slogan-flags and clich\u00e9-signs to \u201cprove\u201d the correctness of their positions. Occasionally, people tragically slip into that raging river and are swept away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep-down, what does all that shouting and posturing really matter?\u00a0What seems to matter to the river-banks people is their inalienable right to be angry, to be fearful.\u00a0I thought our inalienable rights were to \u201clife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness\u201d, not anger and fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What \u201cmatters\u201d to us is arguably what we value, and what we trust (have faith in).\u00a0With me so far?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let\u2019s identify some of the hot-button things that matter to us. Some will contradict each other. But don\u2019t let opposites cancel each other out. Consider the possibility you might learn from those things you currently oppose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truth matters. Lies matter.\u00a0Votes matter. Law matters. Masks matter. No-masks matter.\u00a0COVID information matters.\u00a0COVID misinformation matters. All lives matter. Black lives matter. Blue lives matter. Wealth matters. Living wage matters. Poverty matters. Individualism matters. Community matters.\u00a0Partisan politics matters. Non-partisan politics matters. Sharing matters.\u00a0 Selfishness matters. Character matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Love matters. Apathy matters. Compassion matters. Hate matters.\u00a0Respect matters. Disrespect matters. Personal responsibility matters. Social responsibility matters. Nonviolence matters. Violence matters. Reality matters. Denial of reality matters. Gun rights matter. No-gun rights matter. Honesty matters. Dishonesty matters. Friendship matters. Enemies matter. Learning matters. Ignorance matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the list goes on! Feel free to add your own matters that matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, ask yourself which of these reflect the deepest values that you hold dear. Which of these reflect the faith (trust) you put into other people and\/or other institutions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now comes a tougher part of my exercise. Look at things that you don\u2019t agree with.\u00a0You may disagree a little, or very passionately.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you value honesty in yourself, can you honestly see anything in those disagreeable matters that just might come from the same values you hold?\u00a0Might someone who holds a totally opposite view from you actually hold the same value as you do?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have to work really hard to \u201cwalk a mile in that person\u2019s shoes\u201d.\u00a0But what if you just can\u2019t\/won\u2019t do that?\u00a0How will you try to understand someone who is so polar opposite you?\u00a0Or will your values let you forget about understanding that person?\u00a0Just asking, folks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Jesus-way to rephrase the values question: \u201cFor where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.\u201d (Matthew 6:21) Sometimes what we treasure and what we value seem to take different paths.\u00a0Which path to follow?\u00a0These days, that\u2019s sometimes a toughie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or how about \u201cBut I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you\u2026\u201d (Matthew 5:44). Don\u2019t you get irritated when Jesus\u2019 own words drill down to where you live?\u00a0I do.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you want to stay comfortable in your choices of what matters to you, perhaps you need to stay away from what we know as the Sermon on the Mount (Chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew). Reading and reflecting on those things that mattered to Jesus always challenges our faith and values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The Rev.
