{"id":21785,"date":"2021-02-03T12:59:18","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T20:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greaternw.org\/news\/?p=21785"},"modified":"2021-02-03T13:00:17","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T21:00:17","slug":"ash-wednesday-in-a-time-of-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greaternw.org\/news\/ash-wednesday-in-a-time-of-covid\/","title":{"rendered":"Ash Wednesday in a Time of COVID"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Beyond the ritualistic familiarity of Ash Wednesday, this day speaks into this season of COVID. As we hear, \u201cRemember that you are dust\u2026and to dust you shall return\u201d we remember that ashes have long been a symbol of our humanity and, therefore, our own mortality. This reminder of the fragility of life and our dependence upon God is an appropriate theological emphasis in the midst of a global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greaternw.org\/reimagining-life-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reimagining Life Together Guidelines<\/a>\u00a0don\u2019t allow our churches to practice this day in the ways that many of us have been used to. The health risks are too great to loosen the restrictions on mask wearing, distancing, and singing.\u00a0Churches may be wondering how they can, within their approved reopening plans, have a creative and meaningful Ash Wednesday. While it may not be what they are &#8220;used to,\u201d there are ways to think and act creatively;\u00a0<em>reimagining<\/em>\u00a0this start to the Lenten season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A socially-distanced Drive-In or outdoor worship could be a good fit with many of our existing plans.<\/li><li>Some churches are providing ashes for families to impose at home.<\/li><li>Take-Home-Kits could include burlap swatches with ash crosses already applied for parishioners to wear.<\/li><li>Ash cross temporary tattoos may be purchased (one pastor found putting ashes on a piece of copy paper effectively made a temporary tattoo).<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umcdiscipleship.org\/articles\/tips-for-ash-wednesday-during-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Discipleship Resources has provided a wealth of suggestions<\/a>\u00a0that could be adapted to approved church reopening plans.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of our communities have extreme outbreaks at this time. Moreover, more contagious strains of the virus are now spreading across the country. It is crucial that protocols are observed.
