{"id":22922,"date":"2022-09-15T18:59:29","date_gmt":"2022-09-16T01:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greaternw.org\/news\/?p=22922"},"modified":"2022-09-15T18:59:30","modified_gmt":"2022-09-16T01:59:30","slug":"become-a-church-historian-and-share-your-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greaternw.org\/news\/become-a-church-historian-and-share-your-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Become a church historian and share your story!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By John Townsend<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Church history is important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Book of Discipline<\/em>&nbsp;\u201cstrongly recommends\u201d that each church have a church historian \u201cin order to preserve the history of each local church.\u201d Along with preserving the church\u2019s records and artifacts, church historians \u201chave the sacred responsibility\u201d of documenting the work of their church in the world in its time and in its place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In joining the ranks of church historians, one joins an illustrious company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, the Bible is a history book, a \u201cnarrative of God\u2019s acts with the people of Israel and with the people who became the early Christian community.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;The apostle Luke, the author of the Acts of the Apostles, a \u201cprototypical work of church history,\u201d can be considered a church historian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, faithfully recording the narrative of God\u2019s work in the stories of each local church and congregation, and preserving each church\u2019s records and artifacts is an important ministry.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how to do that well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conference Committees of Lay Servant Ministries and Archives and History have the answer.&nbsp;The Local Church Historians School (LCHS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LCHS is an intensive, self-paced course with the objective of&nbsp;developing a ministry of memory in every local United Methodist Church. Through this course, offered through the General Commission of Archives and History (GCAH), you will&nbsp;learn from leading Methodist scholars, archivists, and historians, gaining the skills to discover, document, and share the stories of your local church community.
