We\u2019ve just entered the four-week period called Advent, the time when the Christian church prepares for the birth of God (the baby Jesus).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Underlying that birth for many people is the concept we call \u201cinnocence.\u201d Jesus\u2019 innocence is usually connected to his being without sin. But what if Jesus wasn\u2019t innocent in that way? What if Jesus wasn\u2019t innocent at all? What if being fully human and fully divine (\u201cand\u201d being a key word here) meant Jesus was as uninnocent as we are?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an August 2022 daily meditation, Father Richard Rohr reminded his readers: \u201cThe Latin word innocens<\/em> means \u2018unwounded.\u2019 Here we worship a wounded man \u2026 and yet much of our moral concentration is on proving we\u2019re not wounded, we\u2019re not wrong, we\u2019re not at all bad, we are not unworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you considered that Jesus was born into our world wounded, just like you and I were? After all, God had been seen for centuries as \u201cwounded\u201d in various ways. (Example: God was \u201cwounded by love\u201d when Israel continually disrespected their covenant with God. Yet God\u2019s stubborn love upheld that same covenant.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why would we not expect God\u2019s son to carry the genes of woundedness into this world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a deep irony in Rohr\u2019s affirmation. While we follow a wounded man, we let our deepest fears drive us to deny our own woundedness. We\u2019ve been brainwashed to believe being wounded means we\u2019re not worthy of being loved by God or anyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we work overtime to pretend we are innocent (unwounded). This seduces us into membership in various \u201ccults of innocents.\u201d There are groups of many kinds (and\/or destructive attitudes) that blind us with delusions of purity, of superiority, and even supremacy over other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brian McLaren borrowed \u201ccult of innocence\u201d from Nadia Bolz-Weber, then spoke with brutal honesty about this cult in his most recent book, \u201cDo I Stay Christian?: A Guide for the Doubters, the Disappointed, and the Disillusioned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McLaren suggests if Christianity is primarily a pathway to innocence\/purity, then its intent is to separate the clean from the unclean. Millions of Christians think allegiance to Jesus and\/or the church will put them on a train to heaven, while others not so blessed are headed to hell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Christianity becomes a religion of \u201cseparation, superiority, and exclusion.\u201d Did you remember that one definition of \u201csin\u201d is \u201cseparation\u201d? So perhaps we\u2019re actually talking about a \u201ccult of sin-nocence<\/em>.\u201d That portmanteau might describe the cult better!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, Jesus was born into a world where people were separated by economics, class, and religion. Some people were convinced they were superior to others. Some people were cruelly excluded in countless ways. But that wasn\u2019t how God intended people to treat each other. That certainly wasn\u2019t how Jesus is portrayed in the Gospels. Nor reflected in Christians today when we are at our best!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But too often, we are hyper-proficient in projecting our own inner woundedness onto others. Maybe we unconsciously don\u2019t want others to feel innocent when we feel so wounded ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we join ourselves up with a cult of sin-nocence <\/em>to justify our sense of being unworthy by attacking others with our judgment of their unworthiness. Political, religious, and social unworthiness seems in vogue in our American culture. We fight it \u2013 or wallow in it \u2013 seemingly every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there are ways to escape living in a cult of sin-nocence<\/em> where all we can do is pretend we are unwounded. McLaren identifies one way briefly: \u201cYou stop seeking innocence through separation. Instead, you seek love through solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The love-through-solidarity thing simply involves hanging out with other people (not always Christians, either!) who better understand that love draws out the best in our humanness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m for that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
