Irony comes from a Greek word, \u201ceironeia,\u201c which means \u201cfeigned ignorance.\u201c\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such example may be the \u201cwoke\u201d cultural phenomenon. Perhaps many persons who think something is \u201cwoke\u201d are feigning \u2013 pretending \u2013 to be ignorant. His explanation of \u2018woke\u2019 clearly proclaimed that history \u2013 Black history especially \u2013 must be embraced and affirmed. His description is reflected in how the Oxford English Dictionary defines \u2018woke\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Woke\u2019s Been Distorted<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, \u2018woke\u2019 is a heavily wounded word. It\u2019s been distorted by both well-meaning and mean-spirited people who toss it around like a rugby ball; then run after the player with that ball.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Folks, it simply means becoming realistically aware. \u201cWake up\u201d, if you will! There\u2019s the irony, folks.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christian Nationalism is an ironic case in point. (<em>Full disclosure: I\u2019m a retired United Methodist pastor. My view of this distorted, rigidly narrow Christian message is what drives me to an informed repudiation of Christian Nationalism.)&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This authoritarian ideology is a mish-mash of religious, political and cultural misinformation that masquerades as \u201ctruth.\u201d It paints those who disagree as \u201cwoke.\u201d&nbsp; Yet in the light of factual truth-pieces, we can assume Christian Nationalism is actually \u201cun-woke\u201d itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I must quickly say that while many of these folks are churchgoing believers, not all Christians are \u201cChristian Nationalists.\u201d Far from it!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Yelling Loud&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>But the nationalist-leaning folks have a large bullhorn, and are eager to use it to push their repressive agendas. They shout loudly here in north Idaho, in bodies like the Idaho Legislature (and many other state legislatures), or in many groups and individual homes around our country.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christian Nationalists have chosen to embrace what Kelly Ann Conway characterized early in the Trump administration as \u201calternative facts\u201d (rather than historical realities). The result is always a dangerous distortion that undermines the whole concepts of political democracy and religious freedom.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few \u201calternative facts\u201d that Christian Nationalism bases its \u201cauthority\u201d on (from \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/24\/us\/white-christian-nationalism-blake-cec\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">An \u2018imposter Christianity\u2019 is threatening American democracy<\/a>,\u2019 a CNN analysis by John Blake, July 24, 2022):\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) A belief that the US was founded as a Christian nation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the notion that the U.S was founded as a Christian nation is bad history and bad theology, says Philip Gorski a sociologist at Yale University and co-author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Flag-Cross-Christian-Nationalism-Democracy\/dp\/0197618685\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some founding fathers saw the new nation through biblical lenses, many did not. And virtually none of them could be classified as evangelical Christians. They were a collection of atheists, Unitarians, Deists, and liberal Protestants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2)&nbsp;A belief in a \u2018Warrior Christ\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For so many participants in the Jan. 6, 2021 Insurrection at our nation\u2019s capital (and their thousands of supporters), that event was as much religious as political. It appears based on a very limited interpretation of Jesus as a violent warrior found in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/revelation\/19\/11-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Revelation 19:11-21<\/a>. It\u2019s in stark contrast to the Jesus found in the four Gospels, a man who subverted the religious and cultural systems in prophetic ways, but never as a violent warrior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another sad irony here: in Kristin Kobes Du Mez\u2019s exceptional book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jesus-John-Wayne-Evangelicals-Corrupted\/dp\/1631495739\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation,<\/a>\u201d she observes that \u201cWhite Christian nationalists do not accept this \u201cmilitant masculinity\u201d when exhibited by Black, Middle Eastern and Latino men. That characteristic leads to another belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3)&nbsp;<strong>A belief there\u2019s such a person as a \u2018real American\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expert researchers on Christian Nationalism observe that \u201cThe nation is divided between \u201creal Americans\u201d and other citizens who don\u2019t deserve the same rights. So many groups (people of color, LGBTQ communities, demonized \u2018others\u2019, etc.) don\u2019t count politically when it comes to the key act of democracy: voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the idea that we are the people, and our vote should count, and you\u2019re not the people, and\u2026 you don\u2019t really deserve to have a voice,\u201d Gorski says. \u201c\u2026Because we know that all real Americans voted for Donald Trump.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people are prevented from voting, whether in local community elections, or state and national elections, we crack open a dangerous door to the whole experiment called Democracy. So become informed, and vote.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get woke! Stay awake to historical realities as they are, not as you want them to be. America will be better for it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The Rev.
