Paul Graves<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"dropcapp3\">Do you remember the first time you lied as a child? I don\u2019t. But I\u2019m sure it was for a very good reason \u2013 like not getting in trouble with Mom or Dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m sure it started a self-protecting pattern from whatever. So in today\u2019s culture of rampant, toxic lying, I have to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is it important that so many politicians lie? Why is it important that so many of their followers believe them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I decided on Oct. 7 to focus this column on \u201cbearing false witness\u201d (or \u201clying\u201d if you prefer), I\u2019ve tried to monitor the political lying episodes recorded in our media. It\u2019s astounding \u2013 and disheartening \u2013 to see how easily politicians at all levels can lie with conviction and not care they are lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My column decision was triggered by Donald Trump\u2019s obsessive lying about so many things \u2013 but specifically the dangerous lies that FEMA funds were supporting illegal immigrants instead of hurricane victims. That was\/is obviously \u201cfake news,\u201d and cruel on many levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional lies cascade from Trump and his MAGA cult followers: denying the 2020 election of Joe Biden, or that Jan. 6, 2021, was filled with \u201clove and peace\u201d or the countless lies about Haitian and Venezuelan immigrants. Too many to list in these last days of the election season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve shared this \u201ctruth\u201d story from Sr. Joan Chittister before. It bears repeating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOnce upon a time a visitor came to the monastery looking for the purpose and meaning of life. The teacher said to the visitor, \u2018If what you seek is Truth, there is one thing you must have above all else.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c \u2018I know,\u2019 the visitor said. \u2018To find Truth I must have an overwhelming passion for it.\u2019 \u2018No,\u2019 the teacher said. \u2018In order to find Truth, you must have an unremitting readiness to admit you may be wrong.\u2019 \u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears that so many MAGA Republicans and their leader cannot admit they may be wrong. I\u2019m deeply sad for them, and fearful for our country if Trump wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But putting partisan commentary aside, I want to consider the human tendency to lie in a biblical context. Lying is only part of our human nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ninth commandment, in Exodus 20:16, \u201cYou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor,\u201d calls us to remember we are more. It condemns false, harmful speech as an act of injustice against God and one\u2019s neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t take lying very seriously. But today, we need to remind ourselves of this. In our current cultural moment, it has become too easy us to lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ease of lying may have a deeper reason. In a 2016 column, I spoke about every person alive being inflicted to some degree with the Tyranny of Certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTyranny\u201d comes from Greek words that mean \u201cabsolute power\u201d, \u201cmaster.\u201d We are addicted to \u2013 tyrannized by \u2013 our own need for certainty when we project our certainty on others as the only worthy way to think. Bold lying strongly suggest someone is firmly in the grips of that Tyranny of Certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we\u2019re confronted with that tyranny, we must consider standing up to the bully. Elie Wiesel\u2019s wisdom (\u201cThe Night Trilogy\u201d) is worth heeding here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must \u2013 at that moment \u2013 become the center of the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose your truth-seeking side and vote your conscience!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The Rev.
