Dear Katie, Claire and Andy,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your grandma enjoys avocado toast for breakfast. Our retirement community chefs make good avocado toast. Well, unless the avocados aren\u2019t ripe yet. Then Grandma has to wait until the fruit has become more \u201cperfect\u201d (ripe, complete).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It appears that avocados, like United Methodist clergy, also \u201cgo on to perfection.\u201d (Please let me explain that seemingly unrelated connection.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Methodist pastors are ordained elders, the bishop asks a few historical questions from John Wesley, our founder. One question prompts behind-the-back crossed fingers from many clergy: \u201cAre you going on to perfection?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we silently substitute \u201cperfection\u201d for moral flawlessness or sinlessness, we miss Wesley\u2019s whole point. John actually challenged his pastors to become mature \u2013 as in ripe, completed human development. Like an avocado goes on to \u201cripeness\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPerfection\u201d isn\u2019t merely an achievement, but an ongoing process of maturation. The Greek for perfect is \u201cteleios,\u201d a time when an object achieves its intended purpose (like a hammer, an avocado \u2013 or a person).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For hammers or avocados, perfection is achieved pretty quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for human beings, perfection is aptly titled \u201cUnfinished Business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1 John 4, we read \u2013 but not easily heed \u2013 that we can be \u201cperfected in love\u201d (4:12) and that \u201cperfect love casts out fear\u201d (4:18). That\u2019s a whole lot of unfinished business for us all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So perfection in love has little to do with moral perfection. It\u2019s more about maturing into how we treat other people with acts of offering justice, compassion, love, encouragement and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Joan Chittister\u2019s essays, \u201cSadness\u201d (in \u201cThe Gift of Years: Growing Old Gracefully\u201d), speaks briefly about elders having unfinished business. \u201cThere is unfinished business aplenty to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her phrase sparked my attention, because even at 83, I still have a good deal of unfinished business to conduct. All elders \u2013 and youngers \u2013 who care about their relationships and the culture where we live have unfinished business (UB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kids, what \u201cunfinished business\u201d do you have to address today? Tomorrow? Next month or year? Here\u2019s a bit of my unfinished business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wrote many of these words the day after I attended an evening Peace Vigil in Hillsboro, Oregon. We prayed about, protested and lamented the ICE-related murder of an innocent woman in Minneapolis and the ICE shootings in Portland. I\u2019ll continue to seek ways to bring pastoral support into the immigration chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My UB also includes finding ways to share my \u201cvalues legacy\u201d with our family, and to encourage others in our new retirement community. Additionally, next month I begin my 31st year of writing these faith-and-values columns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My UB includes learning who I am at my age. Grandma and I see that as a daily opportunity. I also want to learn about \u2013 and from \u2013 nonfamily people in my past who have been heroes to me, who are spirit-guides for me, so I can pass along their wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re all \u201cgoing on to perfection.\u201d That means we all have \u201cunfinished business\u201d ahead of us, kids. While we still breathe, we\u2019re called to make a difference in someone else\u2019s life, in our own lives, and in the world. I like how Joan Chittister says it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfinished business is \u201ca process of ripening as we go, getting stronger, getting more caring, becoming more procreative, sharing more wisdom as we grow \u2013 so that those who come after us can walk a clearer path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not one of you is an avocado!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your unfinished business will go beyond an avocado\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your unfinished business is still out in front of you. What is it? I know it will partly involve supporting immigrants. What else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To find it daily, look deep inside your soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
