Do you?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By Rev. Paul Graves<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"dropcapp3 wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s begin with a self-written epigram: <em>\u201cA prism separates light and creates beauty. An ism separates people from their kindness and creates division.\u201d<\/em> Not all isms intend to create toxic division. Still, it happens often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other isms separate people for control reasons: racism, ageism, communism, Christian nationalism, fascism, liberalism, conservatism, capitalism, totalitarianism, etc. Please add your own isms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I want to explore an ism new to my vocabulary: <em>Indifferentism<\/em>. In the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, the word was coined to describe a belief that no one religion, philosophy, or belief system is superior to another; and that all religions are equally valid or equally unimportant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. B.R. Ambedkar&nbsp;changed all that in 1936. He was most famously known as the principal architect and &#8220;Father\u201d of the Indian Constitution, and as a champion for the rights of marginalized communities. In his essay \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Annihilation-Caste-B-R-Ambedkar\/dp\/9391523390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Annihilation of Caste<\/em><\/a>,\u201d Dr. Ambedkar lashed out at the caste system in India. He \u201cwarns against apathy, coldness, and a lack of empathy in society.\u201d In succinct terms, this is what he describes as Indifferentism. So do I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was drawn to this word \u2013 and its emphasis on not caring \u2013 after I wrote last month about the word \u201cdifferent\u201d being a synonym of \u201choly\u201d. Our frequent religious use of \u201choly\u201d can too easily become a mindless routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what makes our lives, or God for that matter, \u201choly\u201d? I think being <em>different<\/em> lifts \u201choly\u201d to a new level of personal awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, <em>Indifferentism<\/em> reflects our tendencies toward apathy, not caring, unconcern, out-of-sight, out-of-mind thinking, and emotional detachment. It\u2019s so different from our desired self-perceptions as caring and engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, I think a good case could be made that <em>Indifferentism<\/em> is the basic ism that gives rise to most all other toxic isms!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dangers inherent in apathy infest every historical cultural movement and every religious tradition \u2013 especially toward people \u201cnot like us\u201d. When we fall into the endless traps of indifference, it\u2019s too easy to justify our not caring about others. And even about ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How about two biblical examples of Indifferentism? Consider the Good Samaritan parable in Luke 10: 25-37. Who is my neighbor? Not the Levite or priest, who paid no attention to the roadside victim. The Samaritan had compassion for the man. Jesus chose to elevate the Samaritan to \u201cgood guy\u201d. That surprise can still catch us off guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or how about the \u201clukewarm\u201d churches of Laodicea in Revelation 3: 15-16? Christ reportedly spits them out of his mouth (metaphorically speaking) because of their collective spiritual apathy. I know of many churches today that should take that warning seriously. However, they may be indifferent to being lukewarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politically, there seems to be no end to the cruelty and tragedy in our current climate, from elected national leaders to local leaders, even to private citizens. Their cruelty of thought and behavior does not speak of indifference, but of multiple kinds of fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when legislators are indifferent to what happens to immigrants arrested without cause, or children going hungry, how can we respond? What is our choice? Indifferentism? Let\u2019s be different enough, holy enough, to really care! Let\u2019s reverse the clich\u00e9 \u201cI don\u2019t give a damn\u201d into the rally cry \u201cGive a damn!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a few thoughts on how to fight Indifferentism in our lives \u2013 and thus make a difference in other persons\u2019 lives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Stay Alert<\/em> (the world needs more alerts)<strong>:<\/strong> Pay attention to the world around you and listen to marginalized voices. <em>Practice basic human kindness and stand up against unfair treatment.<\/em> <em>Speak for the Voiceless and Marginalized<\/em>: Support fairness and equal rights for everyone in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fight your indifferentism! Be different\/holy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>The Rev.
